Nazareth tops William Smith, 9-5

April 18, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team lost to visiting No. 16 Nazareth College this afternoon 9-5 on McCooey Field. The Herons slip to 7-5 on the season, while the Golden Flyers improve to 10-0.

Riding the momentum of Senior Day, William Smith jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage thanks to a pair of goals off the stick of senior attacker Louise Greenwood (Springside School/Wyndmoor, Pa.) at 8:31 and 9:14, respectively. It was just the second time all season the Herons registered the opening goal.

The visitors entered the scoring column at the 12:35 mark, when junior attacker Beth Quartier (Cicero-North Syracuse/Cicero, N.Y.) converted off a free position shot, but sophomore attacker Louise Finnell (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) quickly answered with her sixth marker of the season less than a minute later.

William Smith built its largest lead of the contest at the 26:21 mark, when junior midfielder Sarah Dillon (Blair Academy/Oldwick, N.J.) scored her team-leading 25th goal.

The Herons took a 4-2 lead into the intermission.

Just 52 seconds into the second stanza, senior midfielder Kim Kreskow (Penfield/Penfield, N.Y.) registered her second goal of the contest, cutting the deficit to one.

First-year attacker Michaela Parnell (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) regained William Smith’s two-goal advantage at the 32:48 mark off a feed from junior midfielder Jessica Scott (Waynflete School/Portland, Maine). The Herons could not solve junior netminder Heather Chaapel (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua, N.Y.) over the final 27 minutes as she finished with eight saves.

Junior midfielder Caitlin Zimmer (East Rochester/East Rochester, N.Y.) and classmate Tia Morgia (Watertown/Watertown, N.Y.) set off a six-goal outburst as the Golden Flyers overcame William Smith’s upset bid. Zimmer recorded three goals, while Morgia tallied two goals and handed out an assist.

In goal, sophomore Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) turned in another stellar performance with 13 saves.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m. on April 21, when the Herons travel to Rensselaer.
